However, as he continues to mature, he still struggles maintaining a real relationship with Marianne due to poor communication. As Connell enters college and is thrown into a world where he is no longer at the top of the social ladder, he starts to realize how silly some of his choices were in the greater scheme of things. He hurts her deeply, and for no reason other than to keep his social standing with his friends. In high school, all Connell desires is to be socially accepted, which causes him to make many choices against his heart, including keeping his feelings for Marianne secret. Through the book, the reader follows Connell on a journey to break apart from his fear of what others think and to learn to be a better communicator. Connell Waldron is the quiet male protagonist of the story that is centrally defined by his self-consciousness.
